The HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee is responsible for approving unique symbols and names for human loci, including protein coding genes, ncRNA genes and pseudogenes, to allow unambiguous scientific communication. From 2007 it was based at EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute under the leadership of Dr Elspeth Bruford. Dr Bruford and several key members of the HGNC team became members of the University of Cambridge Department of Haematology in 2018 and in 2023 HGNC moved their physical operation to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
