Department of Haematology

The Department of Haematology is offering two fully funded PhD studentships for students beginning in October 2026.

The studentships offer:

  • Stipend for 3.5 years at standard UKRI rate (currently £20,780 per year)
  • Tuition fees at UK rate (it will be possible to apply for additional fee support)
  • Research expenses
  • Two rotation placements in your first two terms to help you choose your lab for your main PhD project
  • An exciting choice of projects supervised by Department of Haematology PIs. Example projects will be available to view here soon.

Deadline for applications for the studentships: 23:59 UK time (GMT) 30th November 2025. NB These studentships have their own application deadline which is earlier than some other funding opportunities.

Two part application procedure:

1. Apply via the University of Cambridge's application portal. Please note:

  • Choose the course 'PhD in Haematology'.
  • In the 'Research' section of the online application form, where you are asked 'Do you have any research information to add?', if you are only applying for these studentships, you can click 'No'. If you are also applying not for these studentships but for a specific opportunity that you have arranged with a PI, you may however click 'Yes' and complete this section as required for that.
  • In the 'Course Specific Questions' section, where you are asked 'Proposed Supervisor (mandatory)', enter "Haematology PhD studentships application. Desired rotation supervisors:" and the name of two PIs whose labs you would like to join for your rotation placements. A list of Department of Haematology PIs can be found here: Department of Haematology PIs. Please note that for these studentships only, you do not need to contact the PIs before you apply. If you are accepted for the studentships, you will be able to meet with PIs before choosing your labs for your rotation projects. If you are also applying not for these studentships but for a specific opportunity that you have arranged with a PI, underneath, please write "Non-studentship application. Agreed supervisor:" and write the name of the PI you have agreed the opportunity with.
  • In the 'Apply for University Funding' section, click 'Yes, I wish to apply for University funding'. You will be shown a list of other funding you may be eligible for. To maximise your chances of funding, particularly if you will need to pay tuitions fees at the international rate, we recommend that you apply for all funding opportunities you are eligible for.
  • In the 'Other Funding' section, click 'Yes' to say that you have applied for funding, select 'Scholarship/Grant' from the 'Funding Type' dropdown list, enter "University of Cambridge Department of Haematology PhD studentship" in the details box and leave the other boxes blank. If you also have other funding or are applying for it, please enter the details for that also.
  • Please note that your referees need to submit their references before 30th November. When you complete the 'Reference Request' section of the online application form with your referees' details, they will be sent an email giving them access to the portal to upload their reference.

2. Download the Supplementary Application Form and send it to hodpa@haem.cam.ac.uk. The Supplementary Application Form asks you to name two PIs that you would like to study with and justify your choice. These should be the two PIs you entered in the 'Proposed supervisor' box in the online form. We are interested to know how well you understand their research interests and your motivation for working with them. The choice of PIs you enter on the form makes no commitment at this stage. Once accepted, you may choose to work with a different PI, and we cannot guarantee that the PIs you choose now will be available. There is no need to contact the PIs before you apply. The Supplementary Application Form will be seen by the same selection panel as the online form so there is no need to repeat information.

Both the online application form and Supplementary Application Form must be submitted by 23:59 UK time (GMT) 30th November 2025.

We will aim to inform applicants if they have been accepted for interview by the end of December 2025. Interviews will be held January 2025. It will be possible to attend the interviews remotely.

Any questions about the studentships should be sent to hodpa@haem.cam.ac.uk.
